Cape Town - An alleged gang leader was shot dead and another person wounded in two shooting incidents minutes apart, in Manenberg on Tuesday.
Police spokesperson Joseph Swartbooi, said Manenberg police are investigating cases of murder and attempted murder.
“The circumstances surrounding two shooting-related incidents in Manenberg are under investigation.
“Manenberg police attended to two isolated complaints on Tuesday. Upon arrival in Tagus Road, at about 3.30pm, they found the body of an unknown man near Lillian Court who sustained gunshot wounds to his body.
The man, aged 47, was declared deceased on the scene by the medical personnel,” Swartbooi said.
Minutes later, Manenberg police responded to a shooting in Gail Court.
“Upon arrival at the scene at about 3.45pm, they found a 27-year-old man in a critical condition as a result of gunshot wounds. The victim was transported to a nearby hospital for medical treatment.
The unknown suspects fled the scene and are yet to be arrested. The motive for the attacks is unknown,” said Swartbooi.
The shootings come after the murder of Abdullah Boonzaaier, the son of late Hard Livings gang boss Rashied Staggie over the weekend.
Cape Flats community activist Roegshanda Pascoe said there is police visibility in the area, following the incident.
“There are tensions in the area because people are afraid of the shootings and they don’t want gang violence because at the end of the day the elderly, children, and people going to work, suffer the most. I was notified by one of the community members that a gun was confiscated from one of the gangs this morning,” said Pascoe.
Anti-crime activist Yusuf Abramjee said the police needed to bring an end to the bloodshed on the Cape Flats.
“The shootings have been continuing for years. The police need to be proactive, they don’t have to wait for a shooting to make sure they take necessary action.
The Manenberg area, we know, is a hot spot and again it is unfortunate that people’s lives are being lost while the authorities are trying to get a grip on it.
The Anti Gang Unit (AGU) when they were formed, they were effective and I don’t understand why the AGU is not deployed to these affected areas to bring back law and order,” said Abramjee.
