Durban — Seven people were killed in a multiple vehicle crash in Isipingo on Saturday night.
Emer-G-Med spokesperson Kyle van Reenen said they responded to the scene of a multi-vehicle collision on the M35 in the Isipingo area, south of Durban.
He said that reports from the scene were that a minibus, a heavy-duty vehicle and multiple light motor vehicles were involved in the collision.
“At this stage, we can confirm that as many as seven fatalities have been reported from the scene,” Van Reenen said.
He said the necessary authorities were in attendance and would be conducting an investigation.
The KwaZulu-Natal Department of Transport has confirmed that it has received a report about the crash following a head-on collision involving a light motor vehicle and a truck.
Spokesperson Kwanele Ncalane said: “Upon impact, seven people lost their lives and there is currently a multi-task team that is investigating the possible cause of this accident.”
Ncalane said Transport MEC Sipho Hlomuka had sent condolences to all of the affected families and called for a speedy investigation.
The MEC had since tasked all agencies to investigate the incident thoroughly and called on motorists to drive cautiously, considering the fact that there seemed to be changing weather patterns in the province, increasingly with rainfall in the afternoons.
“Therefore we are calling on road users to behave responsibly and make sure that they abide by the rules of the road,” Ncalane said.
