Durban — Four robbery suspects were arrested following a chase in Durban, thanks to a client who followed the suspects and reported their movements to a private security company.
On Monday afternoon, PT Alarms Tactical Unit South members received a call from a client for assistance following a barber shop robbery in the Bluff.
PT Alarms spokesperson Dhevan Govindasamy said it is alleged the suspects stormed in and robbed the patrons, the owner and the store next door of an undisclosed amount of cash, cellphones and cigarettes before fleeing in a red VW Polo sedan.
He said the client was proactive and jumped into his vehicle attempting to discreetly follow the suspects after reporting the incident to PT Alarms.
“PT Alarms Tactical Unit South sprang into action and a pursuit commenced with the client providing location updates,” Govindasamy said.
“The suspects fled up Bluff Road then onto Edwin Swales Drive and onto the M4 northbound heading towards the Durban CBD.
“The suspects veered into Victoria Embankment heading towards the beachfront when the PT Alarms Tactical officers cornered them on Shepstone Road.”
Govindasamy said all four occupants of the vehicle were quickly apprehended.
“Cash, cellphones, a firearm and other items which were taken in the robbery, were recovered from the suspects’ possession,” he said.
Govindasamy said the Durban Metro police also responded quickly to the scene.
Urban Defence, a private security company, also provided backup.
“Thank you to all role-players involved who assisted and to the client for bravely following the suspects leading to their successful arrests,” Govindasamy said.
KwaZulu-Natal police spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda confirmed that Brighton Beach police arrested four suspects aged between 24 and 37 years for a case of business robbery on Monday on Bluff Road.
He said the suspects appeared in the Durban Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday.
“Reports indicate that the complainant was at a business premises when he was confronted by the suspects who robbed him of an undisclosed amount of money, cellphones and cigarettes,” Netshiunda said.
