Durban — Displaying his skill and determination, Pranay Sharma, 21, from India has claimed three gold medals at the Commonwealth Karate Championships, which were held at the Olive Convention Centre in Durban, recently.

This accomplishment not only highlighted Sharma's prowess as a martial artist but also cemented his status as a rising star in karate globally.

Sharma, a black belt with a 3rd Dan rank, began his karate journey in 2012 and quickly made a name for himself, showcasing his talent by winning his first bronze medal at the WKF Youth League in Greece, just a year later. His success in Durban is a testament to his hard work and relentless dedication to the sport.

The championships, hosted at the Olive Convention Centre from November 28 to December 1, saw a large participation from numerous countries, marking it as a significant event on the karate calendar. Sharma praised the experience in South Africa, describing the event's high standards, arrangements, hospitality, and overall environment as exceptional.

“The big number of countries participating was the highlight of the championship,’’ he said.

Sharma's journey to success in Durban was not without its challenges. Just 20 days before the competition, he suffered an injury to his eye during the Moscow Universe Karate Championship, preventing him from training properly, he said.

Sharma added that his resolve shone through as he stepped onto the tatami just days before the event.

Sharma has ambitious goals, looking to win medals for his country at both the Asian Games and the World Championship.

“My future goal as of now is to win a medal for my country in Asian Games and World Championship.’’

Sonny Pillay, President of the South African Karate Federation, echoed Sharma's potential.

“In my humble view as the President of the Commonwealth Karate Nations, Pranay Sharma is India’s karate superstar, and he has the potential to soon become a World WKF Karate Champion, no doubt! Importantly, his sound work ethic has resulted in his Commonwealth glory in winning three gold medals, especially leading Team India in being crowned Commonwealth Cup Champions 2024."
