DURBAN –The Hawks have reported that they have recovered ammunition suspected to be from the container looted in Montclair in July.
Hawks spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Philani Nkwalase said the Hawks’ National Priority Violent Crimes team alongside Crime Intelligence, Special Task Force and Durban K9 Unit recovered 512 rounds of ammunition suspected to be from the container looted in Montclair around July 2021.
Nkwalase said the team had reacted swiftly to information received about illegal firearms in the Umbumbulu area, south of Durban, and a search operation was conducted on Friday in an abandoned kraal in the Nkomazi area in Umbumbulu.
“A total of 15 boxes of 9mm Magtech ammunition was recovered containing approximately 512 live rounds of ammunition,” Nkwalase said.
“No one has been arrested at this stage and the ammunition found was seized for further investigation.”
During a media briefing on July 16 2021, acting minister in the Presidency Khumbudzo Ntshavheni said on July 14, 2021, two suspects aged 16 and 23 were arrested at Mobeni after they were found in possession of an unlicensed firearm and 4 000 rounds of ammunition.
The suspects were charged with possession of an illegal firearm, possession of rounds of ammunition and possession of suspected stolen property.
Ntshavheni also stated that the day before, on Leister Road in Mobeni, 1 050 boxed cartridges were found abandoned.
On the same day, also on Leister Road, near the Tastic factory, 900 boxed cartridges were found abandoned.
