Durban — An off-duty security manager has been praised for coming to the aid of a woman who was shot on a Durban highway blocked with rocks.
The Fidelity Services Group said the police recently took custody of a suspect thanks to the vigilance and compassion of a local security officer.
Fidelity Services Group head of marketing and communications Charnel Hattingh said that just after 3.30am on September 13, Fidelity Security manager Ray Nelson was off-duty and travelling along the N2 towards Spaghetti Junction when he stopped to assist a female motorist in distress.
She said the woman had been driving alone when she came across rocks obstructing the N2 near Spaghetti Junction and stopped to assess the situation.
“Two suspects approached her vehicle and opened fire. She was shot in the leg,” Hattingh said.
She said Nelson arrived on the scene at 3.40am and immediately intervened, detaining one suspect.
“He proceeded to render first-aid to the victim until Medi Response advanced life support paramedics arrived to assume care of the patient,” Hattingh said.
She said the woman was stabilised and transported to hospital for further care.
“We commend our officer for showing such a great display of integrity and compassion and for going the extra mile,” Hattingh said.
On Tuesday morning, Medi Response spokesperson Paul Herbst said paramedics responded to the N2 at Chesterville on Monday night following reports of a shooting.
“Well done to the off-duty officer who went beyond the call of duty,” Herbst said.
