Durban — The Minister of Police, Senzo Mchunu, has commended SAPS for progress in detecting and removing drugs from communities nationwide.
He was speaking during a ministerial stakeholder engagement on Friday. Nationally, in one week, there was a drug lab bust worth R2 billion in Limpopo. Cocaine worth R252 million was seized in Still Bay, Western Cape. In the Northern Cape, mandrax to the value of R395 000 and tik were seized during operations.
Mchunu says that working together with all stakeholders, including communities, is what will assist the SAPS in defeating crime nationwide.
“The police discovered in Groblesdal, drugs to the tune of R2bn, we are aware of Western Cape just this Friday, and by then they (police) had started operations. All over even in the Northern Cape for that matter. So there is this, but it also includes its matters,” Mchunu said.
He added that there is an overall concern that “not only is the hike a perception but a feeling of the people on the ground, nationwide”.
“However, coming from the stakeholder meeting, one realises that certain forms of crime or types of crime in terms of statistics from the past financial year are showing a decline.
“While it is a decline, it is a decline on the highest level. It doesn’t reflect necessarily on the ground and feelings and perceptions of the people. But, if you look at figures there is a decline on this and that, but that does not mean that overall crime has declined, especially because it is declining from a high to lower level,” Mchunu said.

Cliffe Dekker Hofmeyr’s senior account manager, Inganathi Mnyasane, told the Daily News that a person attending will “come out different”.
“What the appropriate measures are to combat substance abuse in the workplace will be addressed. How to effectively deal with an employee who is under the influence of drugs and alcohol,” Mnyasane said.
