Durban — Two boys were left shaken after two suspects allegedly attempted to kidnap them in Durban over the weekend.

In a crime report, Swift Private Security said that at approximately 6pm on Saturday, Swift Private Security received multiple alerts regarding an attempted kidnapping on Effingham Road in Effingham Heights.

The Swift Control Centre immediately dispatched several response vehicles, arriving on the scene within minutes.

“Upon arrival, our Swift officer interviewed two boys, aged 12 and 14, who reported that while walking on Effingham Road, a white Toyota Corolla (registration unknown) pulled over.

“Two suspects exited the vehicle and attempted to force the boys inside,” Swift Private Security said.

The company said the boys managed to escape by jumping into a nearby resident’s property.

The suspects immediately fled the scene when their attempt failed and they exited heading towards Chris Hani Road.

“Fortunately, the boys were not physically harmed but are understandably shaken by the incident,” Swift Private Security said.

The Swift Control Centre contacted the boys’ parents.

“Please be on high alert for a white Toyota Corolla with a noticeable dent on the right-hand side and report any suspicious activity,” Swift Private Security warned the public.

The company said it alerted Greenwood Park police.

Responding to a request for comment on the attempted kidnapping, KwaZulu-Natal police said: “No case was opened with regards to the attempted kidnapping at Greenwood Park SAPS.”

Meanwhile, last week, the parliamentary portfolio committee on police agreed with critical stakeholders within the policing portfolio to work together to strengthen the accountability ecosystem of the SAPS as a solid foundation to enable effective policing.

The committee said recent cases of extortion in Mthatha that have led to the closure of businesses and schools; the construction mafia that has halted much-needed infrastructure projects; and the worrying increase of kidnapping syndicates point to endemic crimes that threaten the safety and security of South Africans.
