Kate Hudson is set to make a highly anticipated return to the screen in Mindy Kaling’s upcoming Netflix series, “Running Point.”

Renowned for her role in the classic film “Almost Famous”, Hudson takes on a fresh challenge as Isla Gordon, the unconventional president of the Los Angeles Waves basketball team.

This 10-episode basketball comedy, which also stars Max Greenfield, marks a significant moment in Hudson's career, especially following her recent success in the music industry with her debut single, “Talk About Love”.

“Running Point” is scheduled to premiere on Netflix on February 27, introducing viewers to Hudson’s character, who is the only sister in a family of brothers and is highly ambitious yet frequently overlooked.

However, the dynamics shift dramatically when her brother is compelled to resign from the presidency of the Waves, leading to Isla's unexpected ascent to power.

“Now that she’s stepping up into the family business, she’s going to have to prove to her sceptical brothers, the board and the larger sports community that she was the right choice for the job,” the streamer explained.

“Over the course of the series, she sets out to do just that - especially in the unpredictable, male-dominated world of sports.”

The series also stars the talented Brenda Song, Drew Tarver, Scott MacArthur and Fabrizio Guido among other familiar faces.

The roots of “Running Point” stretch back to 2021, when it was conceived as an unbranded project inspired by the iconic Los Angeles Lakers.

In an interview with the online platform, “Parade”, Kaling gushed about Hudson.

“Besides being a movie star, Kate is like an iconic rom-com figure, so having her in the show and just hearing her deliver lines inspires me.”

She added: “Her cadences make me want to rewrite things and create new storylines around them. She's so good at physical comedy too, which inspires us writers to give her more pratfalls and gags.”

Kaling’s reputation for crafting relatable and engaging content precedes her, with a track record of hit shows including “The Mindy Project”, which was renewed for an astounding six seasons, “The Sex Lives of College Girls”, “The Office” and her career highlight, “Never Have I Ever” among other popular shows.

Recently, Kaling also celebrated another milestone, as her short film “Anuja” received a nomination for Best Live Action Short Film at the 2025 Academy Awards.

Expressing her excitement on Instagram, Kaling shared: “AHHHHHHHH #AnujaTheFilm is headed to the Oscars! A story of resilience, sisterhood, and hope - we’re incredibly honoured to be nominated for Best Live Action Short Film at the Academy Awards 2025 ...

“It has been such an honour to produce this short film and learn from the artists involved. So proud @kalinginternational gets to be a part! ❤️❤️❤️.”

As excitement builds for “Running Point”, viewers are eager to see what’s in store for them.
