After an enthralling year filled with drama, heartache and the complexities of family dynamics, M-Net’s drama series, “Summertide”, ends on Sunday, January 19.
When marine biologist Martin Field (Frank Rautenbach) made his return to South Africa with his children Tristan (Jan Combrink) and Lucy (Evangelina Hallock), they were escaping the shadows of loss following the death of his wife, Julia (Amalia Uys).
Their homecoming to False Bay, where Martin grew up, unearthed a past rife with emotional complexities, his strained relationships with his parents Wilma (Terry Norton) and Jack Field (Andre Jacobs), as well as the return of Rebecca Solomons (Monique Rockman), his first love entwined in her own struggles.
The last year has seen dramatic explorations of new relationships, personal tragedies and community dilemmas like the illegal fishing crisis and an unsettling shark attack.
As the season finale nears, the story unfolds with brewing tension and unresolved conflicts: Hannes du Plessis (Morne Visser) is entangled in questionable business ventures, a mysterious woman disrupting his life and Rebecca standing trial amidst unexpected circumstances.
Meanwhile, Martin struggles as Charlie (Tany van Graan) re-emerges, clouding his already complicated existence.
Over the weeks, the series has continuously highlighted themes of resilience and unity.
“From the beginning, we wanted to inspire hope, to show that no matter what challenges life throws your way, your family and your unique South African community can come together to help you through it, said producer Corné van Rooyen.
With its stunning backdrop along the Western Cape, “Summertide” also carried vital messages about ocean conservation, making it as striking visually as it is narratively.
Having been commissioned for only 52 episodes, The weekly drama’s highly anticipated finale promises to be an emotional episode filled with joy, sorrow, and unexpected revelations that fans have come to cherish.
“As the story concludes on 19 January, we are incredibly proud of the result and the amazing support from our viewers,” said Waldimar Pelser, director of Premium Channels at MultiChoice Group.
∎ The last episode of “Summertide” will air on M-Net (DStv channel 101) on Sunday, January 19, at 6pm.
