Your Sensory Baby by Megan Faure (Penguin, R220)

Your baby has a special language through which he communicates and if you understand this language, your life – and your baby’s – will be a whole lot more peaceful.

Megan Faure, founder of www.babysense.co.za and author of several baby books, has just released her latest. Your Sensory Baby aims to help parents understand why their child is crying, if he is not getting enough sleep and how to understand the signals the baby is sending.

It is very reader-friendly, which is just what stressed parents of fractious babies need.

The book walks parents through the first 12 months of baby’s development, showing how to establish routines that benefit both mother and baby, reassuring mothers that routines don’t come easily and, just like adults, babies have good and bad days.

It looks at the benefits of stimulation, warning that more is not better.

There’s a comprehensive section on premature babies that deals with stimulation, sleeping, feeding and activities.

This book is an informative resource for parents dealing with everything from breastfeeding to sleeping and colic in a way to benefit both babies and parents.

It also has a glossary of terms and useful resources for more information.

Highly recommended. - Lindsay Ord

Sister Lilian’s Babycare Companion (Human and Rousseau, R236)

Parenthood can be daunting and babies don’t come with a how-to manual. But this book helps parents negotiate the choppy waters of caring for a baby and nurturing it to toddlerhood.

Sister Lilian is a well-known babycare expert and, in this updated edition of the book, she addresses the most important babycare issues from birth to three years.

It contains a day-by-day, week-by-week and month-by-month look at the first year of the baby’s life, aimed at instilling confidence in the mother while she gets to know her baby. There are practical tips to help with baby and tips for mom in the early days and weeks. As baby gets older, the author suggests baby games and offers advice on common concerns.

Everything is in bite-sized pieces and this is a book that is easy to dip into and out of - when you get a few minutes to yourself. The author integrates complementary (especially homeopathic) remedies where there are solutions for health problems like colic, childhood diseases, feeding problems and sleep disturbances. A useful addition to a young family’s bookshelf. – Daily News
