Vacuuming up waste from the sea

Electrolux SA is launching a project to create an eco-friendly vacuum cleaner made from recycled plastic gathered from our coastline.

It will partner with a “conservation and community design partner” in the “Vac from the Sea” project, which has been very successful internationally.

“Plastic waste from the Pacific, Atlantic and Indian Oceans, as well as the Mediterranean, Baltic and North Seas was collected and used to design five stunning eco-friendly vacuum cleaners,” says Electrolux SA GM Stuart Spencer. “We are very excited to launch this exciting initiative in South Africa.”

The aim of Vac from the Sea – which will produce a purely demo model – is to raise awareness of plastic pollution in our oceans.

The project will run until November, when the SA-designed vacuum cleaner will be revealed alongside all five international Vacs from the Sea. Follow the project on Facebook.

Making use of household waster

Every month the average South African household produces about 60kg of “wet” waste, which is made up of vegetable and food scraps as well as grass cuttings and leaves.

Instead of putting this waste into refuse bags – about 24 million tons a year end up on landfills which are near or running over capacity – you could be making compost.

Green Genie sells a 750mm-high composter for R595 that will produce nutrient-rich compost and inexpensive fertiliser for veggie gardens and plants after about three months in an easy and odour-free way. It takes most garden trimmings and most kitchen waste.
