Durban - A joint operation yielded positive results after goods valued at over R1.2 million were recovered when a truck with two trailers hijacked on the N2 by Umgababa near Umkomaas was tracked and recovered in Estcourt last week.
Provincial police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Nqobile Gwala said on November 16, it was alleged by the complainant that at 4.50 am, both he and his colleague parked a truck on the N2 freeway in Umgababa when they were accosted by two armed males.
“At gunpoint, they robbed them of two trailers and cellphones and fled the scene,”she said.
Gwala said a case of car-jacking was opened at Umkomaas police station for investigation.
She said the investigation led to the Estcourt area.
An operation involving Magma Security & Investigations, Pietermaritzburg Flying Squad, Ladysmith K9 and Tracker Connect was conducted.
Shaheen Suleiman, the owner of Magma Security & Investigations, said on November 16, at around 9 am, they received an activation for two hijacked trailers.
“Members immediately started tracking and proceeded along the N3 heading towards Mooi River. Members then proceeded into the Escourt CBD area, and the two trailers were located,” he said.
Suleiman said members approached the trailer and noticed one male wearing a reflective jacket working under the trailer and the driver exiting the truck.
“Both suspects were detained and handed over to the Ladysmith K9. Recovered value of goods worth over R1.2 million,” he said.
Police said two males, aged 33 and 37, were arrested for being in possession of the suspected stolen property.
“They were found in possession of the stolen trailers, truck, cooking oils and cellphones,” said Gwala.
Police said the suspects appeared at Estcourt Magistrate’s Court on November 17, 2022.
