The Minister of Basic Education, Siviwe Gwarube, has sent her deep condolences to the families, friends and schooling community of the learners from Rocklands Primary School and Laerskool Blyvooruitsig in Carletonville who lost their lives earlier on Wednesday in a car accident.

The incident occurred on Monday morning where 11 learners from Rocklands Primary School and one learner from Laerskool Blyvooruitsig lost their lives while travelling in their scholar transport which was burned beyond recognition. It is reported that seven learners have been rushed to a medical facility.

It is alleged that the learner transport was hit from behind by a bakkie, causing it to overturn and subsequently catch fire. The accident is alleged to have occurred around 6.45am

“The loss of loved ones is never easy. The loss is markedly acute when it is our children that we have to bury. We offer our heartfelt sympathies to the parents of the children. We will keep you in our thoughts and prayers, hoping that healing and grace locate you. We also wish the learners who were hurt in the accident a full and speedy recovery,” said Gwarube.

The DBE said Gwarube was in contact with the MEC for Education, Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation in Gauteng, Matome Chiloane, to be kept abreast of updates in this matter.
