Mandla Mokoena, from Msunduzi Municipality’s Animal Pound Unit, was performing his duties on Tuesday afternoon when a truck crashed into his parked vehicle on Montgomery Drive resulting in his death.

Municipal spokesperson Ntobeko Mkhize, said that at around 4.45pm on Tuesday, Mokoena was parked on the side of Montgomery Drive where he usually dispatches services of the Animal Pound Unit.

“A truck rammed into his vehicle propelling it into one of the residences.”

Mkhize said he died shortly after he was rushed to a nearby hospital.

“It is with deep sorrow and heavy hearts that Msunduzi Municipality announces the tragic passing of one of our esteemed employees, Mandla Mokoena, who lost his life in a tragic accident while performing his duties.”

Mkhize said Mokoena was employed within the municipality, under the Roads Department before he was seconded to the newly established Animal Pound Unit.

Prior to that, she said, he worked as a bodyguard for Speaker Eunice Majola, and former Msunduzi mayor Zanele Hlatshwayo.

“Mandla was not just a colleague, he was a dedicated and passionate employee who embodied the spirit of service to his community.”

She said throughout his career, Mokoena was known for his unwavering commitment, tireless work ethic, and a compassionate heart.

“He was always driven by a desire to make a difference and leave a lasting impact on the lives of those around him. Mandla's selflessness and dedication to his work were evident in everything he did.

“He was more than an employee; he was a beacon of hope and inspiration, constantly striving to improve the lives of the people he served.”

Mkhize said Msunduzi Municipality's leadership and staff have been deeply affected by his death. “His passing leaves a void that cannot be filled. However, his legacy of service, dedication, and compassion will continue to inspire us all.”

The municipality extended condolences to Mokoena’s family, friends, and colleagues.

“The municipality will offer all the necessary support to his loved ones and will honour his memory by continuing to uphold the values he exemplified in his service.

“As we mourn the loss of a dedicated and beloved member of our community, let us remember Mandla for his courage, kindness, and unwavering commitment to serving with compassion. May his soul rest in eternal peace.”
