APPROXIMATELY 100 University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN) students living at a leased residence in Pinetown protested outside the Kingswood residence yesterday morning.
Normah Zondo, UKZN executive director for corporate relations, said the students began protesting at 7.40am.
She said the students raised issues regarding old beds that needed replacing, faulty geysers and stoves that didn’t work.
“A meeting was convened with the building’s managers who gave the assurance that the beds will arrive at the end of October and that the other two matters were being addressed urgently,” said Zondo.
The students dispersed at 1.15pm, she said.
Zonda added that a case was opened with the South African Police Services (SAPS) and that the fire department and Pinetown SAPS had attended the scene.
Provincial police spokesperson Colonel Thembeka Mbele confirmed the incident.
“We can confirm that there are students protesting on the UKZN Edgewood Campus grounds and police are on the scene to monitor the situation,” she said.
