Durban - A bystander who witnessed an attempted hijacking in the parking area of a property near Warner Beach along Kingsway Road in the Winklespruit area of eManzimtoti opened fire on the suspects, foiling the hijacking on Saturday.
Police spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda said the police in eManzimtoti responded to an attempted hijacking that was reported along Kingsway Road in Winklespruit on Saturday, December 3.
“On arrival they found the abandoned vehicle, and reports indicated that the suspects lost control of the hijacked vehicle after a bystander reportedly opened fire towards them,” he said.
Netshiunda said it was further reported that the suspects fled the scene in a getaway vehicle.
In the video of the incident which is circulating on social media platforms, a white vehicle is seen coming to a stop at the back of a property.
Moments later a silver vehicle pulls up next alongside the vehicle and four people alight from the car. They rush to either side of the white car.
The men make the driver get out of the vehicle. One of the suspects is seen searching the driver while a suspect on the passenger side drops something in the frenzy. It is believed that he may have been stealing from the passengers.
Two female passengers are then seen walking to the rear of the vehicle with their hands in the air.
The getaway vehicle, at this time, moves to the main road at the front of the property.
As the two suspects take off in the hijacked car, the two women run for cover.
It is believed that the bystander, at this time, began firing shots at the suspects, and the vehicle came to an abrupt halt.
The other two suspects sprint to the getaway vehicle.
Meanwhile, as one of the suspects in the hijacked vehicle attempts to jump out, the vehicle crashes into a fence of another property.
At this time the driver’s door is flung open and the fourth suspect throws himself out of the car.
He appears to be injured and begins crawling down the driveway towards the getaway vehicle. The getaway vehicle is seen reversing to meet the injured suspect.
Another suspect jumps out of the getaway vehicle with a large firearm in his hand, allowing the injured suspect to get into the back seat of the silver car.
