Rochester Hills, Michigan - Equus Automotive, creator of the Mustang-inspired Bass 770, sees itself as the American equivalent of tuners such as Brabus and Alpina, but with a twist.
Equus doesn’t modify cars - it creates them, in the spirit of the 1960s and 70s, but with modern powertrain and running gear, and even more exaggerated styling than the originals.
This, then, is its homage to the classic Corvette Stingray, the aptly named Throwback, based on the current ‘Vette, but with a custom all-carbon fibre body that channels styling cues from the glory days of this American automotive icon.
Only 25 will be made, with prices starting from $130 000 (R1 55 million) and will be built to individual order, so the opportunities for personalisation - either for performance or style - are limited only by the customer’s imagination and finances.
Equus doesn’t specify powertrain details for the Throwback, although educated guesswork would suggest a Chevrolet crate engine, for ease of installation. It does, however, offer tuning kits that will take it up to 750kW and 1114Nm, for a 0-100km/h launch in just over 2.5 seconds and a top speed of more than 350km/h.
The baseline (you can’t call it standard) interior is re-trimmed in alcantara with diamond quilting on the seats and engine-turned aluminium trim on the centre console - but you can ask for anything you want.
