Spy pictures showing the all-new Toyota Fortuner undisguised have hit the web ahead the SUV's international unveiling later this week.

Given that these are likely Thai-spec prototypes, however, it is possible that the South African model could look slightly different to this when it goes on sale in 2016.

Like it or not, the new design is more radical with its large chrome grille, slimmer headlights and taillights as well as blacked-out C- and D-pillars that create a 'floating roof' effect. You're certainly not going to mistake this for its conservatively-styled predecessor.

While Toyota is remaining tight-lipped on the new model, logic dictates that it will be based on 2016 Hilux and thus built on an all-new and more rigid ladder frame and ride on thoroughly updated suspension.

You can also expect new 2.4-litre and 2.8-litre diesel engines and a new six-speed automatic gearbox option. In Hilux models the 2.8 dishes up 130kW and 450Nm in automatic guise, with manual versions rated at 420Nm, while the 2.4 is reportedly good for 110kW and 343Nm (manual) or 400Nm (automatic).

This Fortuner will have to face up to stiffer competition as Ford's all-new Everest is set to hit the streets later this year. Will the Toyota retain its sales stranglehold over the segment or will the Ranger-Hilux fight spill over to SUV territory? Interesting times ahead.
