Toyota SA has announced prices for its first genuine sports car in many years, the all-new, rear-wheel drive Toyota 86 two-door 2+2. The standard model will premiere here on 9 July, with two high-spec models to follow later in the month.
So let's get right down to it.
86 Standard - R298 500
86 High Spec - R329 400
86 High Spec A/T - R346 500
All three models have Subaru's newly-developed two-litre, four-cylinder boxer engine - the first horizontally opposed engine to be fitted with Toyota's D4S direct petrol-injection system. The combination delivers a quoted 147kW at 7000rpm and 205Nm at 6400.
The high spec model, in manual or six-speed paddle shift format, comes with keyless entry and start, leather/alcantara upholstery, auto aircon and 17” alloys rather than the 16” hoops on the standard model.
In addition to Toyota's usual warranty, all 86 models will come with a four-year or 60 000km service plan.
“The 86 is more than just another car, it's a new direction for Toyota.”
Toyota SA head of marketing Kerry Roodt said: “Here you have a car that's designed around the driver, for those who regard driving as a passion rather than a necessity.
“These cars have always existed, of course, but it's not often you get one in this price range from a mainstream manufacturer - a proper sports car for the price of a hot hatch!”
