This is the first teaser image for the Hybrid-R concept - Toyota's 'halo car' for the Frankfurt motor show - that actually shows the car itself. Well, sort of.

Toyota says the concept is "based on a current production model"; anoraks will already have noticed that the picture looks like a Yaris with huge intakes, lowered suspension, sexy alloys and a body kit.

But (and this is a big but) it's motorvated by a powertrain derived from the TS030 Hybrid endurance racer - a highly-tuned petrol engine and electric motors - to provide a total of "more than 298kW".

FIRE-BREATHING MONSTER

It even has a dual-mode ECU mapping, similar to that used on Yamaha motorcycles (with which Toyota has a long-standing technology tie-up) to make it relatively drivable on the street and a fire-breathing monster on the track.

The implication is that the Hybrid-R concept is a runner, in which case Cyril speaks for all of us when he says, "Yes, please!".

We'll have more for you when Toyota pulls the covers off the Hybrid-R at 12.45pm on 10 September at Frankfurt.
