Toyota’s Japan-only GRMN turbohatch

American sportsbike enthusiasts have a name for it: unobtanium. You know it's out there, but you're never going to be able to buy it.

And that certainly applies to this limited-edition GRMN Turbo version of the Japanese domestic market-only Toyota Vitz hatchback - which we know as the Yaris. GRMN stands for Gazoo Racing tuned by MN1, which tells you something about this pocket rocket's pedigree.

The turbo boosts the output of the 1.5-litre engine from 80 to 112kW (ouch!) backed up by 206Nm of twist and delivered through a five-speed manual 'box, while chassis dynamics benefit from specially-tuned sports suspension, upgraded brakes with four-pot opposed-pisto callipers and 17" BBS alloys.

BLACK OR WHITE

Available only as a three-door, in a choice of just two colours (pearlescent white or black mica), it's distinguished from the 'vanilla' Vitz by LED headlights, a deeper front apron, side skirts, a huge diffuser over a drain-sized tailpipe and, of course, exclusive GRMN badging.

The cabin is tricked out with special sports seats, sports instrument cluster and a three-spoked leather steering wheel with red contrast stitching.

Only 200 will be made, and they will sold exclusively online from 25 August - on a first-come, first-served basis - to customers who live within the sales area of one of 107 Area 86 dealers across Japan (now that's exclusive!) at ¥2 700 000 (R273 000) each.

So for all except 200 very lucky Japanese hot-hatch enthusiasts, the Vitz/Yaris GRMN Turbo will always remain just that - unobtanium.
