This experience is undeniably one of the most uniquely special events that I have been fortunate enough to participate in.
Spectacularly astonishing that the winner is rewarded handsomely with a staggering new vehicle, not just any vehicle but the phenomenal Toyota Fortuner.
That so much of the attention is drawn towards this aspect of the competition is perfect, but to only be aware and focus on this would be an injustice to the event's heart.
It is by far the most genuinely happy, energised and respectful environment I have participated in. The journalists of the media houses that each of the four participants represents, Toyota and numerous sponsor representatives, the challenge organisers, location staff and sports celebrities (Heroes) are thrilled to be involved from the moment everyone says hello to the very last goodbyes.
This is the spirit upon which everything is founded and centres.
Regardless of the enormity of the prize, competitive determination and seriousness are bound only to the time it takes to complete each taxing, wonderfully thought out and meticulously compiled challenge in which physical abilities and mental cognition are tested simultaneously alongside sports stars who at times appear to be more motivated to win than the participants themselves.
At no stage is anyone made aware of team standings and relative performance and this is a great approach because it keeps the humble, friendly atmosphere and enjoyment alive throughout.
I was exhausted by the time the final task had been completed but the exhilaration of what I had experienced alongside Giniel de Villiers was so palpable that I clearly remember that it was enough for me.
I did not need to win the Fortuner. This is how incredible an experience this was to me.
We were not allowed to head away though as the final challenge was being forced to wait patiently for the evening’s proceedings while under the intense scrutiny and gaze of everyone about and the privileged, hopeful stress of an indescribable moment, the reveal.
