The facelifted Volkswagen Touareg will be available in South Africa from August 1, featuring a fresh new look, updated tech and a rationalised range.

As before, all models are powered by Volkswagen’s 3.0-litre V6 TDI turbodiesel engine with 190kW and 600Nm on tap, paired with an eight speed automatic gearbox and 4-Motion all-wheel drive system.

But whereas the previous range had three derivatives, the new Touareg is available in two flavours, with the new Elegance trim replacing the previous Luxury model at base level and a single R-Line derivative replacing the previous Luxury and Executive R-Line options.

The 3.0 V6 TDI Elegance is now priced at R1,457,900, which is a R13,000 premium over the previous base model, while the R-Line at R1,763,900, carries a premium of just R3,000.

So what’s new for 2024?

The Volkswagen Touareg gets a new look up front, with a redesigned model-specific grille and front bumper design. But the big news is the adoption of new IQ Light HD Matrix headlights, featuring interactive LEDs that can mask the area facing oncoming traffic so you can theoretically leave your brights on permanently when driving in rural areas.

The headlights also incorporate daytime running lights with three distinctive L-shaped LED modules, and in keeping with the times, there’s also an illuminated lighting strip across the grille.

Moving to the back, the Touareg gains new LED taillight clusters with dynamic turn signals, and the lights are now connected by a horizontal strip that also incorporates the VW badge. New-look alloy wheels round off the exterior changes to the large German SUV.

There’s a glut of changes inside the cabin, including a 30-colour ambient lighting system with adjustable colour settings across three zones, including the footwell.

Volkswagen has also introduced new textures and trims aimed at creating a more premium atmosphere, while connectivity has been enhanced. For instance the USB-C ports now have a charging capacity of 45 watts, up from 15, and the standard voice control system has also been improved.

In addition to the aforementioned, standard features in the new Touareg include electrically adjustable leather seats.

A range of optional tech equipment is also available, including the Travel Assist package, with semi-automated driving capability, Area View Camera and Night Vision.

All Volkswagen Touareg models are sold with a five-year or 100,000km maintenance plan and three-year or 120,000km warranty.
