Good food and genetics is what a Khayelitsha great-grandmother who celebrated her 107th birthday attributed to her long life.
Nomkwahlazo Busuku celebrated her birthday yesterday with four generations of her offspring.
Busuku’s daughter Nocawe Sogiba, 66, said her mother raised them in the small village of KwaNdonga in the Eastern Cape.
“My mother had 11 children in total, but seven have passed away. She has 56 grandchildren and more than 100 great-grandchildren.”
Sogiba said her mom was a shy and timid person, but raised her children to be respectful and hardworking.
Though Busuku’s memory has deteriorated, she is in good health.
Her grandchildren said she despised doctor’s visits and believed there was nothing that couldn’t be cured by vegetables.
”She says the secret to a good health and a long life is good food,” said her granddaughter Babalwa Busuku.
The Gerontology Research Group in the US last month recorded the oldest person alive as 115-year-old Jeralean Talley of Michigan.
