Johannesburg - Chicken Licken was left with its tail between its legs after an attempt to poke fun at Orlando Pirates backfired.
The chicken franchise tweeted the Soweto club a gif that said: “Bucs, you need to find your inner peace” after Pirates’ loss to Kaizer Chiefs this past weekend.
Along with the picture it wrote: “Don’t worry @Orlando_Pirates, you can get seven pieces for only R69.90 in a Rock My Soul® 7 from Chicken Licken.”
The tweet was retweeted almost 200 times but Pirates was quick to snap back.
They responded by saying: “Dear @ChickenLickenSA, thanks for the offer but we prefer our chicken WITHOUT the hair.” They attached a picture with the Nando’s logo and the response was championed by many of their fans.
@Injemdaka wrote: “Chicken Licken tweeting something too hot and too spicy for my beloved Bhakajujus”
@BoondockWara said: “How does Chicken Licken expect to work with Pirates while they are not even VERIFIED” and @Tshepo_Chino wrote: “Nandos are bullies hey... How could they do that to Chicken Licken! Lol”
@tokelofako tweeted: “People who don’t find humour were already pissed with Chicken Licken. Hahahaha.”
@Blackflava: “So earlier today Chicken Licken tried to be smart with Orlando Pirates and paid the price for it!!!”, and @tokelofako commented: “To think I had Chicken Licken for lunch today, the disrespect!!!”
Chicken Licken’s retort was milder than the initial tweet. “@Orlando_Pirates that hurts but you’ll find that we’ve raised the bar in chicken. Something you may appreciate ;)”.
This seemed to have ended the amusing squabble but another chicken franchise wanted to have a say too.
Nando’s put in its two cents by tweeting: “Claps* We’re chicken royalty. There’s no ‘hair’ to our throne.”
Later, Chicken Licken got the last word in: “Today proved that @Orlando_Pirates fans have amazing fire in their souls. Big respect from the home of Soulfire®.”
