Brussels - A Belgian priest performed a blessing Sunday for smartphones and tablet computers, Belga news agency reported.
Between 300 and 400 people took part in the service at the Sanctuaries of Beauraing in southern Belgium, according to Abbot Christophe Rouard.
Ahead of the benediction, the Jesuit priest held a talk entitled, “Tablets and smartphones … when is it the sky calling?,” Belga reported.
He then read a Bible text and said a prayer, making the sign of the cross.
“The people all took out their smartphones and tablets and father Tommy Scholtes and I passed by with holy water,” Rouard said.
“The goal was achieved - we were able to explain to Christians the purpose a smartphone can have,” he added.
Given the success of its first so-called Media Sunday, the abbey is considering holding a similar event next year, Belga reported.
