London - A court has banned parents from naming their children Nutella, after two couples tried to register the name for their baby daughters.
The parents said they were very fond of the chocolate-hazelnut spread, thinking it is popular, sweet and homely - exactly how they wanted their girls to turn out.
But civil authorities in Valenciennes, near the Belgian border in north-east France, disagreed.
After weeks of legal argument, a judge ruled the name “is not in the best interest of a child”, because of the risk of mockery. The parents agreed to call their girls Ella instead.
In a similar case, a couple from the region were also refused permission to call their child Strawberry.
“Move your strawberry” is French slang for “Move your bottom”, and the fruit has several other rude connotations.
