Sydney - A man in rural Victoria couldn't see what he was doing in the dark while refuelling his car, so he lit a cigarette lighter close to the fuel tank and the car went up in flames, a report said on Tuesday.
Police said the man was not injured, but his car was badly burned, the broadcaster ABC reported.
Police said the man ran out of fuel about one kilometre from the town of Ararat in western Victoria.
He walked to town, got fuel and walked back to his car.
“Because there was no light he's actually, in the process of pouring fuel into his vehicle, he's used his lighter to light up the area so he could see,” acting inspector Brendan Broadbent said.
