Washington -

Police know who built a mysterious tunnel in Toronto, a news report said on Monday.

And like the tunnel, the case is now closed.

Two men told investigators they built the tunnel for “personal reasons” and their explanation has been verified, the Toronto Globe and Mail reported.

The men just “wanted to dig a tunnel,” Constable Victor Kwong said.

No further details were released because the case is not a criminal investigation.

Toronto police last week said a 10-metre-long tunnel had been discovered in a wooded area near a university and asked the public for help to find out who built it and why.

They were concerned because the tunnel was near a sports venue scheduled to be used when Toronto hosts the Pan Am Games in July. Kwong said Monday that there was no connection between the tunnel and the university or the Pan Am Games.

Police described the tunnel as “not your everyday find” and said it was filled in after police completed their on-site investigation.
