London - Struggling all the way, a 4.2m crocodile that was preying on cattle was dragged from a river by a team of Australians.

Police were called in amid fears the huge reptile posed a danger to people.

They enlisted the help of veteran crocodile catcher Tommy Nichols and set a trap. The crocodile was caught in a watering hole on the Daly river in Northern Territory on Saturday but was too angry to be removed until Wednesday.

Even then, it lashed out and wrestled with a team of ten rangers and police who used a rope to drag it from the cage in the water. It snarled loudly as they bound and taped its mouth shut and covered its eyes.

The crocodile is being taken to a breeding centre in Darwin but the trap has been left in place – because the landowners whose livestock has been eaten fear an even larger crocodile is still in the area.
