In an effort to drop the extra kilos, newly appointed Minister of Sports, Arts and Culture, Gayton McKenzie has launched #Wednesdayweight.

The outspoken minister has taken up exercise following his appointment to the portfolio.

McKenzie is encouraging others to take up their weight scales and follow suit.

In a video on X, McKenzie explains that at the time of his appointment, he weighed in at 146kg.

"I started walking and running sometimes but mostly walking. Now I've decided to take it a notch further. We are now having Wednesday weigh-in. Please go get your scale and we are going to weigh in every Wednesday," he said.

In the video clip, McKenzie is seeing getting onto a scale and it shows he's shed some weight.

"I'm 137.9. Next week, we'll see who's fooling who. Got get your scale! Go get your scale! Go get your scale! It feels good. The sale doesn't lie. Salute," McKenzie said.

McKenzie added that he was shocked at how many people have been inspired by his walking and running videos.

Last month, McKenzie shared how he could not button up his suit jacket because of his stomach.

“The Deputy President Paul Mashatile asked me to fasten my jacket during my swearing in ceremony, I couldn’t because of my big stomach. I have since started to run,” he shared.

Mckenzie then shares an updated photograph of himself in the same suit - this time with the jacket buttoned.

So, South Africa, in the words of Gayton McKenzie, GO GET YOUR SCALE!
