uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party has invited all members in the progressive caucus including the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) to its first-anniversary celebration at the Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban happening this weekend.

The party in Gauteng and Mpumalanga marked their anniversary with mini rallies, but the main celebration will take place in KwaZulu-Natal (KZN). This is because KZN delivered the highest number of votes for the party in the May 29 national and provincial elections compared to any other province.

Speaking to journalists on the party’s readiness on Wednesday, MKP secretary-general Floyd Shivambu announced they have extended the invitations to all the progressive parties as well as the EFF.

He added that they would also afford them a chance to convey their messages of support.

“We are extending the invitation to all the parties in the progressive caucus. So we are extending the invitation to the EFF, the African Transformation Movement (ATM), National Coloured Congress, African Unity Congress which is part of the progressive caucus and when they come, we will allow them an opportunity,” he said.

Shivambu further explained that the parties were their strategic friends because they shared similar interests.

Although the EFF is invited, it is still unclear whether they will attend or not because they are holding their elective conference this weekend in Nasrec, Johannesburg. This is despite EFF leader Julius Malema ruling out the ties with MKP

The ATM led by Vuyo Zungula confirmed that they would attend the event. The party also directed the members to be part of MKP’s celebrations.

“As ATM, we have formally accepted the invitation as you agreed in Bloemfontein during the International Thanksgiving Service.

“ATM Leadership and Members in Kwa-Zulu Natal must attend in full force and their big numbers. Please ensure that you sit in one place within the stadium for visibility,” the statement read.
