Parliament - Parliament has resolved that the company that has been commissioned to compile a report on written submissions on the expropriation of land without compensation be called over its preliminary report.
This is after parties disagreed in the chamber on Wednesday on its report. Members of the constitutional review committee were discussing the issue of the expropriation of land without compensation when the report was tabled.
Co-chairperson of the committee Vincent Smith said the company has done 149 000 out of 700 000 submissions.
Out of the 149 000 written submissions 89 000 people said the Constitution must not be amended for the expropriation of land without compensation.
He said 60 000 of the people supported the amendment of Section 25 of the Constitution to allow for the expropriation of land without compensation.
But some of the parties disagreed with this, saying was not a true reflection.
The EFF said the company hired to do this work must be called to explain its report.
It was supported by the National Freedom Party (NFP).
The EFF said this preliminary report was pushing a certain narrative and they will not allow this.
Smith said they agree the company will be called.
“We will get the terms of reference on the company. We will call them next week Wednesday,” said Smith.
