Cape Town - President Jacob Zuma’s office on Sunday said he was still applying his mind to the findings of the commission of inquiry into the shooting of 34 miners at Marikana and would release it in “due course”.
The report was handed to Zuma about six weeks ago and he has faced mounting political pressure to make it public.
The presidency said it had noted inquiries regarding the release of the report and added: “President is still processing the report and will release it publicly in due course.”
It quoted Zuma as saying: “The Commission has made some serious recommendations that require careful consideration. Therefore, it is important to apply my mind carefully so that our response ensures that the events that took place in Marikana are not allowed to happen again in our country. Everything is being done to ensure that the matters are concluded as soon as possible.”
The showdown at Marikana in the midst of upheaval in the mining belt in 2012 led to the deaths of approximately 44 people, the injury of more than 70 others and the arrest of more than 250 people.
