KIMBERLEY – Patrick Kruger recorded his maiden career century as the Knights ended a rain-hit third day of their Sunfoil Series encounter against the Highveld Lions in charge at the Diamond Oval in Kimberley on Saturday.

The right-hander made 102 (175 balls, 14 fours, 1 six) as the hosts declared on 500/8 – a lead of 283.

However, just 46.2 overs were possible on the third day as rain and bad light meant that more than half of the time was lost.

But it was still sufficient time for Kruger, who resumed on 45 overnight, to surpass his previous best score of 86 for Northern Cape against KwaZulu-Natal made in three-day cricket last season.

His century followed that of David Miller’s (103) the previous day, while captain Rudi Second fell two shy of a ton himself when he scored a free-flowing 98 (108 balls, 15 fours).

There was also a half-century from Werner Coetsee, who hit 59 (106 balls, 9 fours).

For the Lions, there was reason to celebrate for Nono Pongolo after he claimed a maiden career five-for by picking up 5/105, with Aaron Phangiso backing him up with 3/118.
