OR Tambo International Airport rocked by technical challenges resulting in delays in departures

Johannesburg - Airports Company South Africa (ACSA) has confirmed that OR Tambo International Airport has been experiencing technical challenges that have led to delays in both domestic and international departures.

In a statement, ACSA said that the refuelling of aircraft was the reason for the delay, as fuel supply from the fuel storage facility to the main hydrant system had issues.

“Airports Company South Africa can confirm that OR Tambo was experiencing challenges with fuel supply from the fuel storage facility to the main hydrant system. This impacted the refuelling of aircraft. OR Tambo Fuel Services Company used a manual system through fuel browsers to fuel aircraft.

“Technicians are on-site and have resolved the issue. They are constantly monitoring the situation. We are currently experiencing delays with domestic departures as well as international departures.”

On his Twitter account, Transport Minister Fikile Mbalula revealed that ACSA management, who assured him that there was no fuel shortage at the airport.

“I have been in contact with ACSA management and have been assured there is no fuel shortage at OR Tambo Airport, but a technical issue at the storage which has been resolved. Management apologises for the inconvenience this might have caused; flights will return to normal schedule.”
