Gauteng MEC for Agriculture and Rural Development, Vuyiswa Ramokgopa, promised farmers that issues of power cuts and shortage of water would be resolved.
Ramokgopa had a dialogue with local farmers in Bekkersdal on Wednesday.
Farmers expressed their displeasure to the MEC with regard to the challenges they faced day to day.
They said these challenges had significant impact on their farming operations and productivity.
During the dialogue, Ramokgopa emphasised the importance of collaboration between the provincial and local governments in supporting the agricultural sector and ensuring the success of the Bekkersdal Agripark.
The MEC and her delegation toured one of the tunnels at the Agripark, which was run by Matebogo Mouwane, who is deaf and also the founder of VoiceOutDeaf NPO.
Since 2016, Mouwane said she created almost 20 permanent job opportunities for individuals with hearing impairments.
The MEC commended Mouwane’s efforts and the contribution she has made to the agricultural sector in Gauteng, honouring women farmers like her who are breaking barriers and creating opportunities for the disabled community.
“As the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, we are committed to working hand-in-hand with our farmers to overcome the challenges they face,” stated Ramokgopa.
The Rand West City Municipality Mayor William Matsheke also echoed the MEC’s sentiments, stating that the municipality was dedicated to supporting local farmers and creating an enabling environment for the Bekkersdal Agripark to thrive.
“We will work closely with the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development to find sustainable solutions to the issues raised by our farmers. The visit provided a platform for open communication and collaboration between the Department, the municipality, and the farming community,” Matsheke added.
MEC Ramokgopa reiterated her commitment to addressing the challenges faced by farmers and ensuring the growth and development of the agricultural sector in Gauteng.
