PEOPLE relying on minibus taxis will be hard hit when taxi operators increase their fares at the end of this year.

The SA National Taxi Council (Santaco) said yesterday that the hike in fares was a result of rising operating costs affecting the industry.

The increase had also been exacerbated by last week’s petrol price increase, which followed the “unprecedented” petrol price hikes earlier in the year.

“The taxi operators find themselves under hard business operating pressures, having to sustain their businesses on the one hand while having to be considerate to the communities serviced by the taxi industry,” Santaco spokesman Thabisho Molelekwa said.

He added that taxi operators did not receive government subsidies.
