SOWETO’S EMERGING contractors’ court bid to get more than R100 million in cancellation fees from Johannesburg Water following the termination of Operation Gcin’amanzi will have to wait until next year to be heard.

Representing 215 companies subcontracted to the project, the Soweto Small Medium and Micro Enterprises Contractors’ Forum is claiming R480 000 in compensation for each.

The forum said they had filed papers demanding cancellation fees and hoped the matter would be heard next year.

Operation Gcin’amanzi was suspended for a few months in 2008 after a legal challenge during which Phiri residents took the City of Joburg to court to stop the installation of prepaid water meters.
