A BAKKIE, allegedly sold in Botswana and later reported as hijacked, has landed a Kliptown couple in court.

The couple briefly appeared in the Lenasia Magistrate’s Court on Friday and were noticeably relieved when magistrate Andrew Reddy granted them bail of R1 000 each.

The prosecutor, who identified himself only as A Fourie, told the court that the man, accused number one in the case, faces a theft charge. His wife is facing charges of theft, perjury, defeating the ends of justice and corruption.

Police said the Volkswagen Amarok bakkie was registered in the woman’s name and she had reported it to the police as having been hijacked.

On investigation by the police and the insurance company, it was found that the vehicle had allegedly been sold in Botswana and that the hijacking was a hoax.

They are due back in court on October 13.
