TWO men fleeing the scene of a robbery in Rosettenville were killed after a shootout with the police in Diepkloof, Soweto.

According to Gauteng police spokesman Lieutenant-Colonel Tshisikhawe Ndou, the robbery happened when a guard was picking up a cash box at a supermarket in Rosettenville.

“As the man was about to leave the supermarket and get in his vehicle, three men between the ages of 25 and 40 took his 9mm pistol and the cash box. The men then fled.”

A lookout with the full description of the car, the men and the direction they were headed was given to the Joburg Flying Squad.

“At the corner of Nongoma and Ben Naudé streets in Diepkloof, the suspects were ordered to stop (by the police). Instead, they shouted back to the members of the flying squad that they were armed and started shooting. Police shot back, killing two.”

The third man, the driver of the vehicle, escaped on foot, disappearing into the narrow pathways between houses.

Ndou said they found the cash box intact as well as three 9mm pistols inside the abandoned car. However, the pistol stolen from the security guard was not found.
