A boy was arrested after a fellow pupil was shot outside their Vanderbijlpark primary school yesterday, police said.

Warrant Officer Kinnie Steyn said the 14-year-old boy, who was apparently dared by friends to bring his father’s firearm to school for R50, allegedly shot the 12-year-old girl around 1.45pm. The boy fled and was apprehended by pupils who witnessed the shooting.

Police arrested the boy after being called by two teachers who took the wounded girl to hospital. Steyn said a case of attempted murder and illegal possession of a firearm had been opened and that the boy’s father had been charged with negligence.

The boy was expected to appear in the Vanderbijlpark Magistrate’s Court today. – Sapa
