Cape Town – The City of Cape Town’s Directorate for Community Services and Health is calling on residents to join its health and wellness goals this year.

The directorate through, its Parks and Recreation Department, released a statement over the weekend, announcing that it would resume its health and wellness initiatives just in time for spring.

According to the City, since the inception of its  Fitness Programme thousands of residents have signed up to participate in physical fitness programmes annually, benefiting from activities such as group aerobics, walking groups and dance that cater to different interests and fitness levels.

The City’s Recreation and Parks Department manages about 3 571 parks, 13 regional parks, 180 indoor centres and 167 sports fields, most of which are used to facilitate a range of fitness activities.

Last year, the City said nearly 37 000 people joined its fitness programmes, signing up for step aerobics and high-energy dance sessions among the most popular activities.

Commenting on the initiative, the City’s mayco member for Community Services and Health Patricia van der Ross said the programmes go beyond improving physical fitness. They work to create welcoming spaces for social connection and community building and positively impact the lives of everyone involved.

She said: “Our Fitness program sees a high participation rate among women, many of whom attend consistently, boosting their fitness levels. Women are the backbone of our communities, and it’s wonderful to see them leading the way in these initiatives.

“As we transition from Women’s Month into the ‘Spring into Fitness’ focus, it's inspiring to witness the dedication and energy these women bring to their workouts and their communities. Their commitment enhances their well-being and sets a powerful example for others to follow,” Van der Ross said.

One of the programme’s regular participants, from Eastridge in Mitchells Plain Natalie February said: “I find it energising to move and not just sit at home, doing nothing all the time. Fitness is not about age and we celebrate people of all ages.”

February, who began her fitness journey with the programme in 2010, attends the seniors’ fitness programme at Tafelsig Community Centre.

“Whether you are a seasoned fitness enthusiast or just starting your wellness journey, these programmes offer something for everyone,” Van der Ross said.
