As Heritage Day approaches, Capegate Shopping Centre is searching for the Cape’s best braai master in the annual Battle of the Braai.

If you’d like to win prizes to the value of R30 000, while enjoying South Africa’s favourite pastime, this competition might just be the one for you.

Those interested in competing must complete a digital form on the Capegate Shopping Centre’s website.

Braai enthusiasts need to add a one-line description of their signature dish and a short motivation as to why they should be shortlisted to compete.

The top 10 finalists chosen will need to submit their recipe in full and upload an image of their proposed dish.

Contestants will have to prepare their ultimate boerewors roll in the first round. Following this, five finalists will prepare their tastiest steak.

The top three braai masters will then be chosen to prepare their signature dish.

All entries must be submitted by Wednesday, August 31, 2022 for consideration.

The event will take place on September 17, at the Capegate Shopping Centre’s undercover parking entry point six from 12pm to 6pm. The Weekend Argus will be present to capture the excitement and spirit of the day.

The three rounds of the competition will be judged by chef and “Taste” author, Clement Pedro, chef and food influencer Bas Newman, and Cape Argus assistant editor, Quinton Mtyala.

Capegate’s marketing manager, Zoë Ganz, said they are looking forward to the day’s festivities.

“We love it when our customers get behind competitions of this nature as this is when we see our Capetonian spirit come to the fore, as well as the unrivalled cooking talent of our braai champs,” she said.

She continued: “It looks like the competition is going to be stiff this year and our judges will have their work cut out for them.”

Mtyala said the Weekend Argus was proud to be associated with celebrating South Africa’s braai culture.

“Braai culture is more than just enjoying tasty meat over hot coals. It brings South Africans together, whether in a backyard or in a park,” he said.

The Battle of the Braai challenge will coincide with Capegate’s Gin and Beer Festival, taking place on September 16 and 17.

The Battle of the Braai winner will receive prizes to the value of R30 000. Each of the 10 finalists will receive a goodie bag to the value of R800 and a Capegate Centre’s branded apron and cutting board.

The Weekend Argus are proud media partners for the 2022 Capegate Braai Challenge.
