JSE-listed Harmony Gold Mining has announced that an electrician died while performing routine maintenance at its Mponeng mine near Carletonville on Sunday.

The company said it was supporting the family and colleagues and has launched a full investigation with the Department of Mineral and Petroleum Resources.

"Harmony Gold Mining Company Limited (“Harmony” and/or “the Company”) is deeply saddened to report a loss of life incident at its Mponeng mine, near Carletonville, on the morning of Sunday, 26 October 2025," the company said.

"The incident involved an electrician who conducted routine maintenance work. Harmony extends its deepest condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of the deceased and is providing support during this difficult time".

The incident follows previous fatalities reported earlier this year at Harmony’s Doornkop and Joel mines. According to the Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (AMCU), it is the 12th fatality at Harmony operations and the 38th reported in the South African mining industry so far in 2025.

"This latest accident marks the 12th fatality at Harmony operations this year, a tragic reflection of what AMCU President Joseph Mathunjwa has described as “the arrogance and self-serving leadership of Harmony, which refuses to accept constructive criticism aimed at improving safety and saving lives.”

"AMCU remains resolute and will not be intimidated or deterred in its fight for zero harm in the workplace. As President Mathunjwa has stated, “We are outraged by this needless death and by Harmony ‘s disregard for worker safety”

The company added that safety remains a core priority across all its operations.

"Safety remains Harmony’s foremost priority and a core value underpinning all operations. A full investigation into the circumstances of the incident has been initiated, led by Harmony management in collaboration with the Department of Mineral and Petroleum Resources (DMPR). All relevant authorities and stakeholders have been informed".
