Farewell to Alan Gooderson: The man who transformed South Africa's hospitality landscape

Alan Gooderson of Gooderson Leisure Group died, at the age of 87. 

"It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Alan Gooderson, a visionary in the hospitality and timeshare industry, and a pillar of the Gooderson Leisure family," a group statement read.

Gooderson's journey in hospitality began in 1958 when he left England to join his family in South Africa.

In 1979, it was Gooderson's passion and entrepreneurial spirit that led him to take over the Gooderson Leisure Group, shaping it into the company it is today.

"From pioneering timeshare developments in the Drakensberg to overseeing the growth and transformation of our hotels and resorts, Alan’s legacy is woven into every part of our business. In addition to his leadership at Gooderson Leisure, Alan played a significant role in the broader hospitality industry."

He was also the Chairman of the KwaZulu-Natal branch of FEDHASA (Federated Hospitality Association of Southern Africa), where he worked to support and advocate for the hospitality industry.

His dedication and contributions were recognised, and in the early 2000s, Gooderson was honored with the prestigious award of Hotelier of the Year.

Beyond his professional achievements, he was a dedicated family man.

Gooderson is survived by his daughters, Cheryl and Colleen, and is reunited with his late son, Daniel as well as his beloved wife, Judith.

"His kindness, vision, and unwavering determination will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him. We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, and colleagues during this difficult time. May he rest in peace."
