So you thought Bafana Bafana had the support of the whole country? They don't - and I have some friends who simply won't back South Africa and in fact shout for the opposition.
A friend, Elijah Moholola, comes from Polokwane. He's a self-proclaimed soccer fanatic and "a proud South African", but not a Bafana supporter.
"They are not even worth watching on TV," Elijah says about the South African team.
"When you miss them playing, you don't feel you've missed a thing," he says without remorse.
He blames it all on the team and the football administration in the country - and judging by the pre-match debacle surrounding Sunday's African Cup of Nations defeat you can see why.
"Bafana players are just not committed to the cause," he says.
"Take a team like Ivory Coast for instance. They are not the best team on the continent and don't have the same training facilities and money that Bafana have, but they are good players and you see a team that is dedicated and would die for their country.
"It's not about whether a team can win the Nations Cup, but it's the effort that counts and Bafana just don't make it."
For a once die-hard Bafana fan, Elijah has made some turnaround.
"I used to support Bafana, until after the 1998 World Cup in France. That was before the beginning of the team's decline.
"Then, the players would not be available to play for the country and we chopped and changed coaches. We could not even stick with the same team for long. That's when I lost confidence."
Moholola blames a lot of things for Bafana's decline. The changing of players and coaches means there is no consistency which makes it difficult for the team to find rhythm or have a style of play, he said.
"Bafana are always in a process of rebuilding... they are never an established team. Against players who compete in Europe's Champions' League, you know they don't stand a chance. The bickering in Safa does not help either, he argues.
"And then there are the politics. If Safa could appoint a coach (with no hidden agendas), empower him so that players can also respect him, things would improve."
Moholola is supporting the Ivory Coast at the tournament.
