She is raising the bar

Durban barwoman Minenhle Majola will be competing against 19 barmen for the title of the Ultimate South African Draught Master in Johannesburg next week – and she’s the only female in the competition.

Majola, who has been a bar woman at Suncoast for three years, has won the regional SAB Top Bar Tender award and is hoping to win the national title with its prize money of R40 000 – and R100 000 for the outlet she represents.

It’s a dream come true for the KwaMashu woman who started her career as a waitress in the casino before being promoted to the position of barwoman.

She is also studying for a law degree and says the money would help her continue her studies.

There’s a skill to pouring the perfect draught and she will come under scrutiny from a panel of judges.

Each finalist will be given three minutes in which to demonstrate their skills.

“Draught needs to be poured at a 45 degree angle to limit the amount of foam, with the label facing the front,” she explains.

Judges will also look at barside manners, personal flair, appearance and among other criteria, the use of the correct catchphrase with the corresponding draft brand, such as “Salute” when serving a Peroni or “Charles” when serving a Castle.

Majola is proud of her achievement and says that her passion for her job is what has earned her this exciting opportunity.

“It will be my first time travelling on a plane and staying in a hotel. I am determined to win this! I want to buy a car and continue my studies.”

Majola said she had had great support and praise from male colleagues.

“The good thing is that I get to practise every day.”

Suncoast’s Food and Beverage Manager, Adrian Roets, said they were proud of Majola for being selected over 70 other bar attendants in KwaZulu-Natal.

“I am confident that her charming personality, warm smile and outstanding bar skills will make her a tough competitor in the competition,” he said.
