Celebrating three years of support for widows in South Africa
Durban — A gathering of women echoed through the corridors of the Power of God Church in uMgababa commemorating the third anniversary of Izwi Labafelokazi, a beacon of hope for widows in South Africa.
Founded in 2012 by a group of resilient women from Edendale, Pietermaritzburg. The organisation embodies the collective strength and determination of those who have faced unimaginable loss. The celebration served not only as a milestone but also as a rallying call for women to rise above socio-economic injustices that often follow the death of a spouse.
Nokuthula Dlamini of Igumbi Labafelokazi Foundation passionately addressed the attendees, urging them to seek empowerment and support from one another.
“Widows often face numerous challenges beyond grief — they encounter socio-economic injustices that can leave them vulnerable. It is crucial for us to support each other and advocate for our needs,” Dlamini said.
Dlamini said that the organisation's roots lie in a shared understanding of the struggles widows face, from financial instability to societal stigma. With an unwavering commitment, it offers a sanctuary where women can gain encouragement and practical skills.
“We appeal to the government to assist widows, especially in their studies, so they are better equipped to fend for themselves. We want to inspire women to rise and pursue their daily bread with dignity,” said Dlamini.
In a heartfelt testament to resilience, Dr Nelly Maphumulo, a guest speaker, galvanised the audience with a powerful message.
“You are powerful and resourceful. Believe in yourselves and take the steps necessary to create change in your lives.”
She further reinforced the notion that empowerment begins within. She further said that the weekend's celebrations were not solely about reflection; they were about envisioning a future where widows are supported and their voices amplified.
